Student life

One of the most unique parts of Haverford College is in their athletics. No many American Colleges proudly offer Cricket as one of their main sports. In fact, Haverford is the only school to offer varsity level Cricket. The team does complete around the country with other schools. Haverford also has over 145 student clubs, and since this Liberal Arts College is only 15-20 minutes from Philadelphia, there is plenty to see and do in the city in just a short train ride.

Many colleges now allow students to apply online. This goes for online colleges and on-campus colleges.  Applications can vary from school to school. Some require some some simple information while others may require more of the student than just their name, date of birth, and tuition payment. Most traditional on-campus colleges and universities require at least one, if not two essays, and possibly an interview with an alumni or member of the admissions department. Online colleges and universities rarely will require an in-person interview, and an essay may or may not be part of the college application process. 

Sure, the lack of  an interview seems like it may help shorten the process of being admitted to your college of choice, but it then provides the student with only way to make a good impression - the application. Proper spelling, punctuation and grammar are very important. For hand-written applications, neat presentable handwriting is vital, with few to no words crossed out or covered in correction fluid or correction tape. Whether it’s online or on paper, make sure the application is neat, thorough, and complete.

 The final portion of the application process is the most difficult….the waiting. It could take days, weeks, or even months to hear back from the school as to whether or not the application has been accepted. If you are not accepted, do not be discouraged. Continue applying to other schools. Most students tend to submit applications to several schools and then have ability to choose between at least two candidates.  There will be a perfect school that will meet you requirements and provide you with the education you desire.

Here are some basic questions you can ask your “self”.

Are you Self-disciplined?: One of the best things about online education is the flexibility of the schedule. The student is responsible for finding their own time to “attend” class, complete course readings and assignments and participate in class discussions. It may seem like the world is your oyster when it comes to finding time to learn, but there are still deadlines for assignments and exams that must be adhered to in order to pass. 

Are you Self-motivated?  The student has to provide themselves with the time to do the work and continue to complete the assigned work throughout the entire duration of the course. It’s easy to put off schoolwork with other more “important” parts of life getting in the way, and the gremlin known as procrastination will rear its ugly head. Can you make sure to avoid this evil little creature? 

Do you have Self-direction? There are professors who create the curriculum, moderate the class, answer questions or concerns, and probably present the online lectures, there’s no “hand-holding” here. The student must be self-sufficient and guide themselves through the course, with the minimal guidance and instruction by the professor.

Are you Computer Savvy: OK, I know this doesn’t exactly fit in with the “self” theme, but in order to learn online, you should have a basic working knowledge of computer and internet technology including web-browsing, e-mail, and word processing. While students don’t necessarily need to be computer geniuses, basic knowledge of computers is vital.

There are three parts to the exam: Mathematics, Verbal, and Analytical Writing.  The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section consists of two essays. Each essay must be completed within 30 minutes and will be scored on a scale of 0-6. The verbal section is next, and consists of 41 multiple choice questions. This test runs approximately 45 minutes and covers questions pertaining to sentence correction, critical reasoning, and reading comprehension. Finally, the third part of the exam deals with mathematics.  It includes Problem-solving questions in a multiple-choice format covering arithmetic, basic algebra, and geometry. Some of these questions will be simple numbers, others involve real-life situations that require mathematical computations.

Scores for the GMAT exam can range from 200-800, with most of students scoring between 400-600. Questions left “blank” actually can hurt the students’ scores more than incorrect answers, and the scores stay on record for 5 years. Many of the more prestigious business programs require a score of 600-700. You may not take the GMAT more than once within 31 days, even if the scores are canceled.

To study for the GMAT there are a number of ways in which one can prepare. There are evening and weekend GMAT preparation study groups as well as several published guides and prep books that are found at your local bookstore or online. A private tutor can also help a student prepare for the GMAT.

The cost of the GMAT is $250, so make sure to take that into account with test prep as well. Paying for a tutor on top of the $250 can be expensive, but well worth it depending on the students’ study habits.

Online learning is just that – You learn online, using the internet. Many colleges and universities have jumped on the online learning bandwagon and are offering individual courses as well as full degree programs through your home computer or laptop. There are a great number of advantages to online learning.

1. The ability to learn from anywhere! That’s right. If you have a computer in your living room, bedroom, bathroom, or kitchen, you can take a college or high school class. If you have a laptop the opportunities to learn from anywhere can get even better. As long as the laptop has a wireless connection or some sort of air-card, students can learn on the train, in the park or even in their favorite coffee shop. With many major cities adding citywide WiFi connections, the ability to log on and gain access to information for coursework leaves very little excuse for not being able to “attend class”.

2. No more rush-hour traffic or annoying commute to campus. No need to worry about a parking space or having all of your materials with you after you make a mad dash out of work to jump onto the highway only to get stuck in a traffic jam. While most online learning doesn’t require to to attend class online at certain day or time, you are required to log onto the student portal for a certain number of hours per week. There are still assignment and test deadlines, but if you wish to participate in your neighborhood’s bowling teams on Tuesday nights at 7:30, don’t let that get in the way of earning your degree. If you are a student who works second or third shift at your current place of employment, you are still able to fit your classwork into your schedule, not the other way around.

3. An online degree is worth just as much as an on-campus degree. I heard an argument the other day from someone that “prospective employers don’t consider online degrees as highly regarded as on-campus”, and that’s why they chose to get permission to leave work early, sit in traffic and still arrive to their class late 3 times per week. Upon graduating from an online degree program, students receive the exact same diploma as on-campus students. No where does it mention that it is an online degree because there is no difference. The way the materials are presented during the degree program may differ, but there are still class discussions and assignments as well as lectures and exams. So whether you’re “busting your rear” in a classroom or cuddled up on your couch in your PJ’s, you’re still earning the same degree.

I really could go on and on about why I enjoy online learning, but I think these few arguments are reason enough to consider enrolling in an online degree program.

On-campus: Anywhere from 5-minutes to an hour depending on location from the college. May have a delay due to road traffic, accidents, delays in public transit, or weather conditions.

Online: 30 seconds, from your kitchen, bedroom, or bathroom to your computer. May have delay due to traffic caused by scurrying pets, children, spouse, or “roadblocks” by objects in the hallway.

Social Aspects

On-campus: Always availability for interactions with students and faculty: whether it is in the classroom, in the cafeteria, student center, or atheletic events.

Online: Although the “face-to-face” interactions may be limited, course discussions are conducted through online chat and bulletin boards through the school’s online portal.

On-campus: Varies from school to school as well as degree type. Then there’s the cost in gas/public transit to get to class on time. Tuition usually does not cover course materials.
