Quinnipiac University to open Medical School in 2013-2014
In January 2010, Quinnipiac University President John Lahey announced that the University is in the planning stages of opening up a Medical School. This school will focus on global health and primary care.
Quinnipiac is already no stranger to the world of global health, having previously worked in many developing countries through their own Albert Schweitzer Institute and School of Health Sciences. Putting both of those under one roof as a Medical School will help to bring their mission together and create a more efficient space to educate as well as offer services to the community and the world.
The building of this school will take several years to complete, as are currently looking at completing construction and opening its doors in 2013-2014. Currently Quinnipiac has their School of Health Sciences in their North Haven, CT Campus, while their main campus is only a few miles south in Hamden, CT. The North Haven campus curently houses programs in nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant, radiology assistant, diagnostic imaging and others, with new programs being added in the next year.
The addition of the medical school will join with the schools of law, education, health sciences, College of Arts & Sciences, business and communications. According to the school, only 89 out of 3,600 universities offer both schools of medicine and law, and soon Quinnipiac will join that select group of schools offering more opportunities for students.
Quinnipiac University also noted the possibility of a national healthcare system being implemented in the United States, required more health care professionals to meet the possible future demand, especially in the field of primary care.
While the medical school is still in the process of being constructed, Quinnipiac still offers a group of online degree programs including an online MBA, MBA in Healthcare Management, Master of Science in Interactive Communications, Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, Teacher Leadership, Occupational Therapy, as well as a variety of certificate programs.
