In January 2010, Walden University announced a new online PhD program has been made available to students in the study of Counselor Education and Supervision. The purpose of this program is to educate those in the counseling profession with the abilities to be leaders in a variety of counseling environments.

This degree has become a vital program because of a recent change to requirements from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) that require new faculty members of CACREP–accredited programs to hold doctoral degrees in counselor education and supervision by 2013. This new program allows those in the counseling profession to learn from experts in the profession, gaining related experience to professionally develop in their technique, create new methods for effective and successful counseling-related program evaluations, and design, introduce and analyze their own research pertaining to the counseling profession.

The Walden University PhD in Counselor Education & Supervision program can be taken alone, or with one of five specialties:

  • Consultation
  • Counseling and Social Change
  • Forensic Mental Health Counseling
  • Nonprofit Management and Leadership
  • Trauma and Crisis

The general program consists of 93 credits and also includes 20 residency hours. The 93 credits are divided into the following categories:

  • Core courses (46 credits)
  • Foundation Research Sequence (16 credits)
  • Elective courses (10 credits)
  • Practicum (3 credits)
  • Internship (6 credits)
  • Dissertation (12 credits)

The tuition cost for this new program is approximately $420 per credit hour, residency hours are extra. Walden University does have financial aid, scholarships, and fellowships available to those who qualify to help fund the cost of education.
